I II III IV V VI

Barubary is a Demon and recurring antagonist in Breath of Fire II. Ryu first encounters him as a child, and encounters him again, roughly ten years later, in the final stages of the game's plot.

Appearance[]

Barubary is a massive demon encased in a large blueish shell leaving very few parts of actual flesh exposed. It has three eyes (with his center eye appearing regularly in certain cutscenes) and a gigantic tail.

Barubary also has broad hands with thick claws at the end of them, and he has a set of small wings on his back. Its lower body consists of six spider like legs which it walks on.

Barubary is purplish in color and and reddish where it's not covered.

Personality[]

Like most Demons, Barubary is loyal to Deathevan's cause and serves as the Demon God's right-hand "man" being Deathevan's last line of defense.

Although devoted to see Deathevan to surge, he is surprisingly far less malicious than many of his kin. Despite being extremely powerful, he does not rampage indiscriminately or cause any major attempt to destabilize the world like other Demons. Barubary is rightfully confident on his power and also follows a code of honor, challenging Ryu to a duel to see if the young man could stand up to the nightmare of his childhood, and was delighted when Ryu took up on his challenge. If Ryu refuses his challenge, he will still commend his drive to win at all costs.

His honorable conduct could be seen when he spared Ryu and Bow when they were children, given he only needed Ryu to live but nonetheless did not bother to kill Bow, merely swatting him. When defeated he will praise Ryu's strength but the scope of his respect depends largely on whether defeated alone or as a party.

If defeated as a party he will comment on Ryu's power being great but still not sufficient to defeat Deathevan. If defeated during their duel, Barubary will offer sincere praise for Ryu and even tell him of a secret treasure as a last form of respect.

Story[]

Barubary is the first major villain encountered in Breath of Fire II and is the penultimate boss, the last obstacle standing between the party and Deathevan. Barubary makes its first appearance in the intro of the game when its third eye becomes visible in the darkness, opens and then stares out. Barubary then prays to its god looking for strength; after it's done praying it then closes its eye and the scene is over.

Barubary shows up not too long after the start of the game when Ryu and Bow leave Gate and find themselves in a dark cave chasing what is later revealed to be Barubary's tail. When Ryu and Bow catch up to it, Barubary whips Bow with its tail knocking him out and then proceeds to fight Ryu, to see if he is worthy of being The Destined Child who will open the gates to Infinity. Barubary easily defeats Ryu but allows him to live since he is necessary for the Demons' plans.

Barubary is later mentioned by the rangers where Bow and Ryu work but is not seen until the end of the game. The final time Barubary is encountered is within in a pitch black chamber in the depths of Infinity and is first battled with the whole team. For his second fight, the player can opt to keep fighting as a team or have Ryu face him alone. If fought alone Barubary replies with delight at Ryu's pride, whereas if fought as a party he will find Ryu's drive to win at all cost to be amusing.

After his defeat, Barubary will give different praise to Ryu depending on how he battled. If fought as a party, Barubary will claim Ryu was stronger than anticipated, but that he will need even more power to defeat Deathevan. If Ryu defeated him in a one-on-one battle, then Barubary realizes they were mistaken into thinking they could rid themselves of the Destined Child once he opened the gates, and praises Ryu for his bravery. As a final act of respect, he tells Ryu to get the treasure. Said treasure is revealed to be the Life Brace which is hidden in the dark hallway and needs a combination of Katt and Sten to successfully acquire.

Barubary appears as a boss twice, the first time being as a child with Bo which is an automatic defeat and the second time being in Infinity where he has two phases, the second one where he can be fought in a duel with Ryu or as a party.
