The guardians fought in the Great War against the Brood. They believed themselves to have wiped them out, When in fact the Brood let them win, because of the potential destruction that would have occoured should the Brood have unleashed their real strength.
After the war, when a Guardian feels his duty is complete, they visit Angel Tower to communicate with God and enter an eternal stone sleep, for their loyal service to God. The only Guardians to not undergo this process were Gaist and Garr.
In the event of the Goddess's death, the Guardians would turn back into stone, as seen in Breath of Fire III.
- Ironically Guardians look remarkably similar to the Dragons they were created to kill.
- All four Guardians' names start with Ga.
- The guardians appear to be based on gargoyles and the notion of them protecting places and people.
- The total count of dragons killed by the guardians during the Great War are 932 (Garr: 299, Gaist: 234, Gatz: 201 and Gaw: 198 respectively).
