Strategy[]
Patrio is by far the toughest opponent of the first stage of the Contest of Champions. He has the highest HP, decent agility, and high offensive power. Worse, he has a high Lucky Strike chance allowing him to score potent critical hits. His Frost Strike is not as damaging but can put a party member to sleep while dealing ice damage.
Ryu is by far the best option to fight Patrio for two reasons. The first is that the equipment sold in the arena immensely favor Ryu's stats. If the player can afford it a Claymore will help Ryu deal massive damage (potentially close to 100 damage per hit), while Scale Mail/Breastplate, Buckler, and Knight's Helm will give him enough defense to make Patrio's attacks deal low damage (except for his Lucky Strikes). The second reason is that Patrio's Frost Strike is a very useful skill for Ryu to learn and if possible should examined from Patrio. However, some preparations are needed in order to help learning it go smoothly: healing items preferably Vitamins will be good, casting Protect will further reduce the damage from his attacks. Finally if the player has obtained the Ring of Ice, it will restore their HP if attacked via Frost Strike.
It should be noted, however, Patrio must be weakened and have less than half his HP remaining before he employs Frost Strike. To reduce the risk of a prolonged battle, the player can have other party members damage and weaken Patrio, and have Ryu eventually take over the fight for a more comfortable time.

Etymology[]
Patrio may be derived from patria, the Greek origin for patriarch, a man with authority over a family. This may then be a reference to Patrio's "family" consisting of him, Cawer and Claw, of whom he is the leader.
