Poison is a recurring status condition in the Breath of Fire series. It gradually decreases the victim's HP over time, either in battle, the field screen, or both. It is most commonly caused by the Chlorine ability and is specifically cured by the Antidote item and Purify spell.

Overview[]

Unlike most status conditions, poison not only affects the victim during combat, but will continue to afflict them after the battle is completed. However, there are exceptions: in Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter it only harms the victim during battle, while in Breath of Fire II it has no effect in battle, but rather only harms the victim while walking on the field map. Poisoning is most often caused by combat abilities, but in some games it can be caused by other means, such as triggering a trap. In many games, a poisoned playable character is denoted by their sprite being tinted purple while in the field and/or combat screens. The condition is also often identified by means of a specialized icon during combat.
