Status Conditions are a recurring gameplay element in the Breath of Fire series. They are conditions that temporarily alter the abilities of a player character. Their effects may be active in battle, on the field screen, or both. Positive status conditions alter the character in a way that makes it easier to achieve the players goals, such as victory in battle, whereas negative status conditions make the attainment of these goals more difficult. The specific conditions that appear in each game vary, although some conditions such as "Death" and "Poison" are present in each game, albeit sometimes under slightly different names.

  • Silence: The victim cannot use magic or dragon transformations.
  • Sleep: The victim cannot take any actions until they are awakened.
  • Stun: Also known as Death in later games. The victim cannot take any action and cannot recover their HP through most means. Stunned characters also do not gain experience points at the end of battles and cannot use magic in the field menu.

Negative Status Conditions[]

  • Agi.Dn: The victim's Vigor stat is halved for the rest of the battle.
  • Curse: The victim's Condition is decreased to the lowest level.
  • Dead: The victim cannot take any action and cannot recover their HP through most means. Dead characters also do not gain experience points at the end of battles and cannot use spells in the field menu. In this game, when a character has the Death condition imposed upon them, there is a slight chance that they will "defy death" and instantly revive with a small amount of HP. The chances of this happening are tied to the character's Guts stat.
  • Def.Dn: The victim's Defense stat is halved for the rest of the battle.
  • Hushed: Any spells cast by the victim will instantly fail.
  • Poison: The victim loses 1 HP per step while talking in the field screen. Their HP cannot drop below 1 as the result of poisoning.
  • Pwr.Dn: The victim's Power stat is halved for the rest of the battle.
  • Rotting: The victim's Power star is doubled, granting them essentially the same effect as this game's version of Pwr.Up. However, after rotting for a single full round, the victim becomes a zombie.
  • Sleep: The victim cannot take any actions until they are awakened.
  • Zombie: Any other status conditions on the victim are instantly removed from the character and their Shaman bonding is dissolved. The victim can no longer be controlled by the player and will spend their actions randomly physically attacking party members. Any items or spells that would normally heal the victim instead cause the equivalent amount of damage. When a battle ends, Zombie characters don't gain any experience points and immediately become dead.

Negative Status Conditions[]

  • Blind: Physical attacks performed by the victim have a much lower than usual accuracy rate.
  • Confusion : The victim randomly attacks enemies and allies alike with normal physical attacks. The effect ends if the victim is themselves hit with a physical attack. In the field screen, directional controls are reversed.
  • Dead: The victim cannot take any action and cannot recover their HP through most means. In this game, when a character has the Death condition imposed upon them, there is a slight chance that they will "defy death" and instantly revive with a single HP. The chances of this happening are tied to the character's Willpower stat. Dead characters are automatically revived after a victorious battle with a single HP, although doing so temporarily lowers their maximum HP until they rest at ann inn.
  • Egg: The victim is unable to act for three turns and their defense is also reduced during this period. However, at the end of their third missed turn, their HP and AP are fully recovered. Characters cannot be affected by this status while in dragon or weretiger form.
  • Paralysis: The victim is unable to take any action until they are cured.
  • Poison: The victim loses approximately 10% of their current HP each turn and any physical damage causes by the victim is also reduced by 25%. In the field screen, the player cannot run and loses 1 HP at fixed intervals. A character's HP cannot drip below 1 due to poisoning in this game.
  • Sleep: The victim is unable to take any action until they wake up.
  • Undead: Any effect that would normally recover HP to the victim now deals the equivalent amount of damage instead.
