Strategy[]

The premise of the battle is that Beyd must fight Zig alone, while the party observes, but refrains from interfering. Before the battle, Beyd asks the party if they will train him, and let him borrow a sword and piece of armor that Ryu can equip; doing so can greatly improve the outcome of the battle.

During the battle, if the party performs an action other than Examine or Defend while Zig is paying attention, and Zig remains standing after the action, the battle will end and Beyd will have to try again the following night. However, Zig will occasionally wave to Shadis, giving the party the opportunity to hit Zig and/or heal Beyd. Once Zig is hit, he will pay attention again, so a fast character should heal Beyd if necessary and then Zig should be hit with the strongest single-target action available (note that Beyd also counts as an enemy target).

Depending on how much training Beyd has done, the party may not need to interfere.

Alternatively, it is possible to win with no training: if the party hits Zig with a single attack which depletes his HP (such as Super Combo with 8+ hits) he will be defeated regardless of whether or not he was paying attention.
